Course Codes
Permission node: ADMIN.ORGANIZATIONAPI: /api/v1/organization/course-codes
A course code is the subject prefix — BIOL, HIST, MATH — that begins every course identifier. It is owned by a department, and through the department by a college.
| Action | Endpoint |
|---|---|
| List | GET /organization/course-codes |
| Get one | GET /organization/course-codes/{id} |
| By department | GET /organization/departments/{departmentID}/course-codes |
| By college | GET /organization/colleges/{collegeID}/course-codes |
| Create | POST /organization/course-codes |
| Update | PUT /organization/course-codes/{id} |
| Delete | DELETE /organization/course-codes/{id} |
This is how a course gets an owner
A course record has no department_id. courses.course_code holds the subject and the catalogue number together — BIOL-101 — and ownership is resolved through the course code's department.
That is worth knowing before renaming or reassigning one. Moving BIOL from one department to another silently re-attributes every BIOL-* course, and with it the workload and revenue reporting that rolls up by department. There is no per-course override to correct an individual exception.
Departments also carry billing accounts
departments holds three general-ledger fields — gl_credit_hour_billing, gl_section_fee_billing and gl_lab_fee_billing. Revenue from a course reaches a ledger account through its course code's department, so a reassignment moves money as well as reporting lines. Check with finance before moving a prefix mid-year.
Naming
Keep prefixes stable. They appear in transcripts, degree requirements, transfer-credit equivalencies and every historical enrolment record, none of which are rewritten when a code changes.
