How Faculty Are Created

A person becomes faculty when:

  1. Assigned to teach a course section, OR
  2. Created administratively as instructor

  2. Search by name or department
  3. Filter by status

How instructor names are shown

Instructors appear on course, roster and report screens under their instructor display name, decided in one place (records.instructor_display_name, migration 298), in this order:

  1. Colleague's faculty listing name (FAC_NAME), stored on the teacher record as display_first_name / display_last_name. The nightly teachers import step stores it whenever Colleague has one, even when it matches the legal name. It is how Colleague's own faculty reports print the person -- "Cronk Gatdula, Amy" rather than the legal "Amy Gatdula" -- so SIS and Colleague now agree.
  2. Otherwise the person's current Preferred Name.
  3. Otherwise the legal name.

Staff and administrator screens that list people by legal name (user accounts and their role assignments, for example) still show the legal name, as they did before.

Department Assignments

Primary Department

Faculty belong to primary department:

  1. Open faculty record
  2. Set primary department
  3. Affects reporting and access

Secondary Affiliations

Track additional affiliations:

  • Cross-listed departments
  • Interdisciplinary programs
  • Research centers

Assigning to Sections

  1. Go to course section
  2. Add instructor
  3. Set role (Primary, Secondary)
  4. See Sections

Colleague removes instructors it no longer lists

On sections that come from Colleague, the nightly import deletes an instructor assignment it made once Colleague stops listing that instructor (migration 293). Instructors added on the SIS screens are never removed by the import, and sections planned in the SIS are never touched. See how deletes propagate from Colleague.
