Advising Types

Each advising link to a student has two independent parts:

  • Primary or not. A student has one current primary advisor -- the advisor Colleague lists first among the student's open advisements, imported nightly (migration 267). Only the primary advisor decides the student's requests: registration approvals and overloads, workflow requests that go to an advisor (such as a Late Add), and course substitutions. Other advisors still see the student, their requests and their audit, and still receive notifications, but cannot approve or reject. A student with no current primary advisor has their requests decided by the registrar.
  • The kind of advisement, the advisor role, taken from Colleague's advisement type: Faculty Mentor, Major Advisor, Minor Advisor, Department Advisor, Preprofessional Advisor, Pre Nursing Advisor, Major & Preprofessional Advisor, Honors Advisor, Education Credential Advisor, Major & Education Credential Advisor, Undeclared Advisor, Masters Degree Advisor, International Advisor, Mentor, ESL and ASUP. The old "Primary Advisor" and "Secondary Advisor" roles are retired: whether you are primary is the separate flag above.

The student's record shows who the primary advisor is. When the registrar assigns an advisor to a student who has no primary, the assignment defaults to primary.
